This New Horror Film Can Be Streamed, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Partnership.

Here's a challenge for partners in committed relationships who enjoy horror films: Sit down with your loved one and stream Together. The independent film success of 2025 just made its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. Outwardly, it might appear like standard physical horror, but inside Together exists a deep contemplation about how we choose to love our partners.

An Introductory Film Investigating The Nuances of Love

Together represents the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as a couple named Tim and Millie, partners that have been together for over ten years. United in marriage in actuality in 2017, the actors bring a special spark to their roles, expertly portraying both the strengths and weaknesses of a long-term relationship.

The story starts when Tim and Millie relocate from the urban environment to the rural area for professional reasons. A familiar plot device, admittedly, but that’s largely where the conventions cease. Together becomes as much a examination of mental states of the partnership as it is a body horror flick.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While walking near their new home, a violent storm occurs, and the protagonists fall into an underground cave. After a night spent there and finally finding a way out, a supernatural entity begins influencing the pair. This force creates a otherworldly bond between them that goes well past simple connection.

The complete narrative is a slow burn horror experience, weaving in moments of fever-dream horrors, disturbing (but tastefully done) body horror, and surprisingly comedic exchanges (sometimes amidst something disturbing). Michael Shanks skillfully blends these components seamlessly and delivers them in a consistently growing atmosphere of fear.

Complex Characterizations

A large part of Together is solely the two lead actors, and they deftly portray countless layers to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Her self-assurance and emotional bond is deteriorating due to a lack of intimacy. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his hesitance to pursue anything but his floundering music career inexorably rises.

In contrast, Tim's character feels trapped and isolated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve relocated rural and removed from his network of friends. He fears the idea of totally forfeiting his personal autonomy in his partner. This fear is amplified by the circumstance he does not operate a vehicle and is dependent on Millie for mobility.

The film's most intelligent aspect is that he never makes one partner or the other the clear bad guy.

The couple confront the sort of issues that are inherent in most partnerships a decade in. Deep down, they have affection for each other. They still laugh together, provide solace, and open up at times. But under the surface, there’s an inescapable feeling of questioning about their relationship.

Thematic Depth

While the paranormal elements in Together act as a metaphor for these fears of unhealthy attachment and fully committing to a partner, the metaphor never feels clumsy or pretentious. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes provide a perfect parallel to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the horror and the drama work together symbiotically.

A Debated Finale

Together’s conclusion, which remains unspoiled, has created disagreement on the story's concluding statement about codependent relationships. Reports indicate that single viewers have understood the narrative as a compelling reason for avoiding commitment. Meanwhile, some couples experiencing tension found that the film ended up guiding them to resolve their issues.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own reaction could function as a revealing measure of how you perceive partnership. Will the ending plant a sense of discomfort and fear, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you identify in one of the characters and yell at the screen, or simply glance toward your partner and state, “We could get through that together”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can undertake today.

Together is streaming on Hulu now.
