Fed Lowers Interest Rates for Second Instance This Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The US monetary authority cut borrowing costs on Wednesday, representing the second rate cut this year during financial volatility originating from the government closure and tariff policies.

Decision Comes at Unprecedented Time for Central Bank

The decision to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an extraordinary juncture for the central bank. The authority has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Notes Job Market Shifts

In a statement, the Fed stated that the unemployment rate had gone up but stays modest. “Job gains have slowed,” the statement reads. “Price increases has risen and remains somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Gathering of important economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the closure.

Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions

The Fed typically analyzes labor statistics to determine labor market conditions, including the number of employment gains created to the economy and the present jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the jobs market in August.

The figure of jobs created to the economy in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and unemployment crept up to four point three percent – the peak since 2021.

Private Data Show Continued Slowdown

Though the bureau was set to release last month’s employment data in early October, it suspended its publication when the closure began. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor reported recently that the private sector eliminated thirty-two thousand jobs in last month, a indication that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined quite sharply,” Fed chair Jerome Powell stated recently, which he had previously said stems from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Shows Moderate Rise

Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the agency still released its inflation report for September that indicated that prices are rising, albeit slowly. Prices increased 3% over the past twelve months, the highest since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target price increase is two percent.
