Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with French warplanes in a coordinated attack on an underground arms cache in Syria employed by the IS group, according to the UK's MoD.

The location, identified by intelligence, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just north of the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a series of approach shafts down to the facility... initial indications suggest the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the strike late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - referred to as Daesh - established extremist governance over large swathes of Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike shows the UK's leading role, and commitment to work closely with allied nations, to stamp out any revival of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," the British Defence Secretary John Healey stated.

British military aircraft have carried out patrols over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted resurgence" of the group subsequent to its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank the personnel of British forces involved in this mission for their professionalism and their valour," Healey commented. "They were part of a great many UK service members on duty over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to eliminate militants who endanger our security, highlights how UK forces are prepared to act, continuously, protecting the UK at home and powerful internationally."

Last December, the American forces conducted what it described as a "large-scale strike" on Daesh sites in Syria, subsequent to an assault resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN reports IS still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Iraq and Syria.
